Why a Regulator ?
The nominal voltage of the electricity in Cyprus is 240 volts but most electrical equipment imported here are manufactured to 220-230 volts standards. The voltages can go up to 260 volts in Cyprus and this is the cause of many electrical faults.
The other problem is low voltage at certain areas due to the lack of proper infrastructure. The distribution lines are not strong enough to cope with the demand. Hence the voltage can go down as much as 150 volts and even lower and this can cause your equipment not to work properly and even cause damage. Many electrical motors burn out for this reason.
One of the other causes for trouble is when the electrics come back on after a power cut which can happen quite often at times. Sometimes great oscillations occur when the power is back on and this produces much higher than normal voltages for very short time, known as surges. Its best to switch off everything when there is a power cut and put them on after the power is back on. This is not always convenient.
For reasons stated above the best solution is to use a voltage regulator. ELKO Regulators adjust the output voltage very smoothly. If the voltage is too low it increases the output and if too high it reduces it to 220 volts or it can be adjusted as requested. Furthermore, ELKO Regulators check the output voltage before connecting it to the output; therefore it avoids the surges mentioned above. If you wish to protect the whole house we recommend a 20KVA regulator.
